HERDADE DA RIBEIRA ABAIXO
30 Years of Science and Education

This short documentary takes us into the Grândola mountain range to explore Herdade da Ribeira Abaixo — a rich cork oak Montado and home to CE3C’s ecological field station, managed by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.

Once abandoned, this historic estate has been transformed into a key site for biodiversity research, conservation, and education.

We follow scientists studying invasive species, uncovering the ecological role of mesocarnivores and tackling the challenges of regenerating cork oak forests. The station also hosts hands-on education, citizen science and long-term monitoring connected to global research networks. Herdade da Ribeira Abaixo is more than a research center — it’s a powerful example of how science, tradition and community can work together for a more sustainable Mediterranean future.
